At the recent Regenerative Agriculture and Food Systems Summit, more than 200 senior decision-makers throughout the food supply chain met to discuss opportunities and challenges for the future of the food system.

Regenerative agriculture is “a way of being, thinking, understanding who we are,” says Reginaldo Haslett Marroquin, Co-Founder and CEO of Tree Range Farms. Haslett-Marroquin urged attendees to embrace “innate intelligence” and “ancestral knowledge” to rectify the damage caused by extractive agriculture practices over the last fifty years. He also emphasizes that farmers must be part of the solution to forge a regenerative future.

Research presented by Sonya Hoo, Managing Director and Partner at Boston Consulting Group shows regenerative systems may generate up to 120 percent increases in farmer profits. Despite these positive insights, many farmers fear economic losses over the first three years of implementation. Out of 100 row crop farmers surveyed in Hoo’s study, 45 percent cited potential yield declines and prohibitive upfront costs for seed and machinery as their top concerns around transitioning from conventional to regenerative agriculture practices.
Small-scale farmers who want to implement regenerative agriculture practices often face barriers to implementation. Candance Clark, Sustainable Food Resource Specialist at Tuskegee University explains that the goals of her work have been to amplify the barriers Black farmers in America face. Tuskegee Cooperative Extension assists farmers in the Black Belt region of Alabama. They provide the resources needed to build soil health and feed communities who have traditionally been marginalized. Clark stresses that policy shifts that increase access to resources for small, marginalized farmers are necessary to achieve equitable, regenerative food systems.

Decision-makers met to discuss opportunities and challenges for the future of the sustainable agriculture practices.
["human-services","food-and-nutrition","region","north-america
After spending 10 years in prison, Simpson struggled to find housing where she was welcome and could afford it. Simpson’s record has placed a laundry list of barriers in her path to fully rejoining society.
But this past fall Simpson and other organizers convinced the Atlanta city council to pass an ordinance banning discrimination based on a person’s criminal history. By making formerly incarcerated people a legally “protected class,” it’s their hope that they can pull down some of the collateral consequences that hamper life for those who completed their sentences, but who remain second-class citizens in myriad ways.
“We're asking for an opportunity literally to just live, and to just be able to grow as people and to really participate in society,” Simpson told me recently.
Most barriers after prison are employment-related. According to the National Conference of State Legislatures, more than half of states in the U.S. have passed some version of “ban the box” legislation. These laws aim to remove conviction and arrest history questions from job applications, and to delay background checks until after a job interview. High school students now make up nearly a fifth of community college enrollment and at 31 community colleges, the majority of it.
Yet even as these colleges serve a significantly smaller number of students, their already low success rates have by at least one measure gotten worse.
Two-year community colleges have the worst completion rates of any kind of universities and colleges. Through this initiative, we will publish research, analysis, and insights that are motivated by a desire to improve the quality of life for those in America’s middle class and to improve upward mobility into its ranks. We have already wrestled with how we define this group, considered its changing racial composition, and called upon experts to outline major policies geared toward improving its fate. But why all of this attention? Here are seven of the reasons we are worried about the American middle class.
Arts education belongs in every student’s curriculum — and not just because the arts can improve skills in other content areas.
As an instrumental music teacher, I am used to advocating that the arts are essential to all students even though they may not be classified as a core subject. Over the years, I’ve used research about how the arts increase math and reading comprehension to defend their existence in the public school curriculum. I’ve pointed out the social skills that band, orchestra and choir ensembles build. I’ve even made the case that for some students, a music, art, dance or drama class might be the only thing bringing them to school each day.
All of these points are true, but they fall short of explaining why the arts truly belong in every student’s K-12 curriculum. Instead, they rationalize the arts through a utilitarian lens that ties their existence to the way they can improve skills and understanding in other content areas. After 20 years teaching music, what I’ve learned is that the arts are essential because humans are inherently creative beings and must be given opportunities to develop their creativity in order to fully understand themselves and participate in a pluralistic society.
Recently, I was humbled and honored to be named the 2022-23 Teacher of the Year in my county as well as one of seven finalists for the state of Maryland. This award gave me the chance to reflect on the purpose of the arts in education and provided a platform for me to explain to those who will listen why the arts are a core subject based on their own merits. The arts are core to education and core to life because the essence of being human is creativity, not productivity. And one of the problems with American public education today is that it is hyperfocused on graduating productive students, not creative ones.

Arts education belongs in every student’s curriculum — and not just because the arts can improve skills in other content areas. As an instrumental music ...
["education","region","north-america","education-philanthropy","arts-and-culture-arts-and-culture","arts-culture
Most white leaders in philanthropy, including myself, know that systems in the U.S. have been built to yield inequitable outcomes, especially along racial lines. In the fall of 2022, I seized the opportunity to join Camelback Ventures’ Capital Collaborative third cohort, seeking to figure out how to better integrate this commitment to my work in philanthropy. Two years into my work as a managing director at Blue Meridian Partners, which focuses on strengthening the infrastructure of place-based partnerships to close disparities and increase economic mobility in communities across the U.S., I sensed a disconnect between becoming an expert funder and supporting racial justice outcomes. Camelback helped me to reckon with this challenge, with white peers and with Leaders of Color who allowed me to improve on how to build relationships and become a stronger person and funder. Camelback Ventures’ Capital Collaborative provides the opportunity for willing and motivated white philanthropic leaders to learn from some of the nation’s most innovative, effective, and creative (and when working with white leaders, patient) entrepreneurs and nonprofit leaders. It’s been a privilege for me to be a 2022-2023 Capital Collaborator with the support of my employer. The following are a few of the most important lessons on taking action that I’ve learned over the past year on this journey: Get out of the way!: It’s time for us to acknowledge that understanding our best role in supporting the systemic changes that close racial disparities is truly right in front of us. When we stop listening so much to ourselves and over-emphasizing our value as being the expertise that we bring, then we can instead commit to listening and moving resources to Leaders of Color who hold the ideas, creativity, skills and knowledge we really need to drive change. This kind of shift is not zero-sum; it actually can help us get to a better outcome. Move the funding, be accountable, and results will follow: It’s great for white funders to learn and hold knowledge, especially about the historical and current systems that perpetuate racism and inequity, but knowledge is not the measure of our success, nor is deepening our understanding sufficient. My success is and should be measured by action - the way in which I support and resource the leaders best positioned to develop their practices and lead on change. We all need to be disaggregating the data – not just on the populations we serve – but on the leaders and organizations we support, and hold ourselves accountable to continuously move more and more funding to leaders and organizations of color. Prioritize Leaders of Color. I am learning to implement contracting and grantmaking practices that prioritize Leaders of Color. I’ve also found that when scanning the field to develop new relationships that lead to providing funding, ensuring that colleagues of color hold power in selection processes is extremely important and impactful. While these lessons may sound straightforward, and the implementation therefore easy, I’m finding that they can be hard, but they are possible. My employer is committed to moving children and families on a path to improved social and economic mobility and deeply understands that our philanthropic capital must work towards closing racial disparities in order to achieve that mission. At the events conclusion, Katikati reflected on key takeaways such as lessons learned from other citizen engagement tools such as automating as much of the platform as possible in order to reserve the human engagement (and bandwidth) for responses to sensitive or nuanced topics and creating a few pre-designed options for organizations to use (with some suggested pre-populated questions and responses) instead of an entirely customizable platform. Also, participants discussed strategies for furthering trust through anonymity such as programming key words in user responses to be flagged for human-led conversation (instead of automated responses), a “pop-up” window that explains with whom responses are shared and how responses are used in the feedback process, and opportunities to opt in/out or have a consent checkbox. The Collaborative for Gender + Reproductive Equity (CGRE) is a learning community of donors and foundations uniting to advance gender, reproductive, and racial equity. Through their grantmaking, they combine a rigorous data-driven funding strategy, deep expertise around movement needs and priorities, and trust and credibility with a robust network of national, state, and local partners to create tangible impacts.
RPA spoke with CGRE’s Executive Director, Margaret Hempel, about the collaborative’s work. Margaret discussed CGRE’s origins, the importance of intersectionality in philanthropy, and her recommendations for donors looking to get involved in the gender and reproductive rights space. This interview reflects edits for length and clarity.
What was the impetus for starting CGRE?
At the end of 2018, the Packard family and the board of the David & Lucile Packard Foundation wanted to bring new money and new donors into work around gender and reproductive equity. A semi-formal cohort already existed around these issues, but funders were seeking community and ready to coalesce around new ideas and leaders. The Foundation made an initial five year, $50 million commitment and reached out to other donors to join. The JPB and Ford Foundations joined almost immediately, and were later joined by philanthropists newer to this funding space, like Schusterman Family Philanthropies.
Our mission centers around the idea that if we build a space for donors that allows them to learn together, then we could also amplify the impact of their work. We wanted to accelerate existing work that had been historically under-resourced and to provide significant resources to groups and leaders who had new ideas and tactics they wanted to test.
This group of funders chose to work at the intersection of gender ,reproductive, and racial equity. We saw that issues around contraception and abortion were often kept separate from other gender equity issues, whether that is childcare, paid leave, pay equity, or LGBTQ rights. This set of issues are often further siloed from racial justice work and democracy building work. All these intersect and must be worked on together; frankly, that is what BIPOC leadership has been telling us for decades. Philanthropy has been slow to catch up, but at CGRE, we hope to help move the needle.

As part of Rockefeller Philanthropy Advisors’ new mission and values, we are featuring in-depth profiles of key sponsored projects to highlight their work in creating a just world. In the realm of social change, community-based leaders are skilled at influencing and using momentum to advance local solutions but often lack all the financial resources they need to push those solutions to their full potential.
What would be possible if investors and funders of all types boldly supported local leaders’ abilities and solutions in new ways? What if leaders could access significantly more and better-suited impact investment and grant capital for their communities? With community-based leaders as a full part of the equation, is it possible to generate enough mass and velocity to equal the momentum needed to solve entrenched social and economic problems?
Tools that can fuel solutions to inequity, exclusion, and extreme concentration of wealth, and push toward inclusive, equity-building impact investing and its intersection with grant funding, are at hand. But researchers approached the question in a novel way: they used advanced wearable activity monitors to follow specific children in a specially designed laboratory school for studying child behavior and development.
“Given that we’re seeing an increasing number of hot days,” says Andrew Koepp, lead author of the paper and PhD candidate in human development and family sciences at the University of Texas at Austin, “it’s important to understand how young children’s activity changes so that we can take steps to make sure they are getting the physical activity they need to be healthy.”
The study looked at children ages three to six who are enrolled at the Priscilla Pond Flawn Child and Family Laboratory School on campus. The study used digital wearable activity monitors on each child for a week in April 2022 as the children played on the school’s partially shaded playground. Ambient air temperatures were between 72 degrees and 95 degrees Fahrenheit.
When temperatures were at 72 degrees, children engaged in moderate to vigorous physical activity (MVPA) for 27% of their outdoor play time. MVPA is defined as raising the heart rate to the point where a person can speak, but would have a hard time singing. When temperatures rose to 95 degrees, MVPA dropped to 21% of outdoor play time. Additionally, sedentary time, where children were sitting or still, rose on hotter days from 62% on play time at 72 degrees to 70% of playtime at 95 degrees.
The Centers for Disease Control recommends that children between the ages of three and five be physically active throughout the day, as physical activity improves young children’s development, academic performance and learning, and helps build strong muscles and bones, contributes to healthy weight and blood sugar levels, and improves cardiovascular, lung, and mental health.
The sample at the laboratory school is made up of healthy, middle- and upper-income children, but, as laboratory school director Amy Bryan, an associate professor of practice in human development and family sciences, explains: “These effects would likely be amplified in more vulnerable children who had health issues or other risk factors for low activity, as would the impacts on their development.”

New
